The Best Obedience Commands Every Doberman Should Know
Share
Dobermans are among the smartest working breeds in the world. Their loyalty, energy, and intelligence make them highly trainable — but only if you use the right techniques. Teaching core obedience commands isn’t optional. It’s the foundation of trust, safety, and control.
Why These Commands Matter
Without obedience, a Doberman’s strength and drive can become unmanageable. The five essential commands below form the basis of clear communication, impulse control, and mutual respect.
1. Sit
Sit is the go-to for halting unwanted behavior and starting structured focus. Use it before meals, crossing streets, or entering/exiting doors. Train by holding a treat over the nose and lifting slightly until the rear touches the ground. Mark and reward.
2. Stay
Teaching your Doberman to stay means gaining control over distance and time. Start with one-second stays and gradually extend the duration. Always return to your dog — don’t call them out of a stay at first. Use high reward frequency early on.
3. Come
A reliable recall can save your dog’s life. Use a happy, high-pitched voice and only say it once. Reward big when your Doberman comes — never use recall to punish. Practice on a long line before trusting off-leash freedom.
4. Leave It
Crucial for avoiding dangers — trash, food, other dogs. Start by placing a treat under your foot and waiting for your dog to stop fixating. The moment they disengage, mark and reward with a different treat.
5. Heel
Heeling teaches your Doberman to walk at your side without pulling. Start by walking in small circles, rewarding attention and proximity. Correct gently for surging forward and praise calm movement beside you.
