Do Dobermans Smell? Grooming Tips to Keep Them Fresh

Dobermans are known for being low-odor dogs — especially compared to heavy shedders like Labradors or Basset Hounds. Their short, sleek coat holds less oil and dirt, so they typically don’t develop that “dog smell.”

But odor can still happen due to:

  • Poor diet (cheap food = stinky skin)

  • Ear infections

  • Dirty bedding

  • Anal gland issues

  • Too few or too many baths

To keep your Doberman fresh:

  • Bathe no more than once every 4–6 weeks

  • Use a gentle, unscented dog shampoo

  • Clean ears weekly with vet-approved solution

  • Wash dog bedding every 1–2 weeks

  • Feed a high-quality diet rich in omega-3s

If your Doberman suddenly smells off, check for medical issues. A healthy Doberman should smell like... well, not much at all.
